In 1964, Bowser organized one of the first complete career retrospectives of director Carl Theodor Dreyer as this, his final film, was preparing for release. Charting the development of his techniques and themes, she praised him as an “uncompromising explorer of the dark side of life.” Noted for its long takes and theatrical staging, Gertrud centers on an independent woman’s struggle to find spiritual release from the demands of her husband and a lover.

This film accompanies In Memoriam: Eileen Bowser (1928–2019).
