Stark Love. 1927. USA. Directed by Karl Brown. With Helen Mundy, Forrest James, Reb Grogan. Approximately 70 min.

Shot on location in North Carolina with a cast of amateur performers, cinematographer Brown’s feature about backwoods mountain folk was intentionally naturalistic for its period, and the “primitive” drama, as the director described it, of a father taking his son’s love interest for his bride is still strikingly frank. Working with a foreign-language print, the Museum’s restoration of the film involved lengthy reconstruction of the original English language intertitles.

This film accompanies In Memoriam: Eileen Bowser (1928–2019).
