E la nave va (And the Ship Sails On). 1983. Italy. Directed by Federico Fellini. Screenplay by Fellini, Tonino Guerra. With Freddie Jones, Barbara Jefford, Janet Suzman. 4K digital restoration. In Italian; English subtitles. 127 min.
And the Ship Sails On finds an assortment of passengers gathered on a luxury liner to mourn the death of their opera-singer friend. The solemn occasion notwithstanding, the eclectic group, including rival singers, conductors, aristocrats, and politicians, wastes little time before starting to bicker and misbehave. Before long, a sing-off is declared, a chicken is hypnotized, and geopolitical warfare breaks out at sea. If life is a circus, every attendee of this memorial is definitely a clown. Made in Cinecittà’s studios, the fabricated sets make this dramedy all the more surreal.
