Prova d’orchestra (Orchestra Rehearsal). 1979. Italy. Directed by Federico Fellini. Screenplay by Fellini, Brunello Rondi. With Balduin Baas, David Mauhsell. 4K digital restoration. In Italian; English subtitles. 72 min.
Made shortly after the kidnapping of Italy’s former Prime Minister Aldo Moro, an event that plunged Italian politics into chaos, Orchestra Rehearsal is a metaphor for Italian society going out of sync, a comedic take on the relationship between the individual and the collective in which an authoritarian conductor leads an orchestra in revolt. This film marks the end of Fellini’s enduring partnership with composer Nino Rota, who passed away shortly after its release.
