Fellini’s follow-up to 8 1/2, and his first color feature, is yet another hallucinatory ride through a troubled mind, this time that of a middle-aged woman, Giulietta, played by the director’s wife Giulietta Masina. Living, or rather trapped, in a home that resembles a dollhouse, Giulietta is married to a self-centered philanderer. To make peace with herself and her situation, she resorts to the world of spirits, as dreams, flashbacks, and surreal visions take us on a kaleidoscopic Technicolor journey.
