Director Asghar Farhadi’s first Spanish-language film is a winding domestic thriller, following Laura (Penelope Cruz) as she returns to her hometown for her sister’s wedding. The night’s festivities turns nightmarish when her teenage daughter is kidnapped and paranoia and distrust settle in among the family. Laura reconnects with Paco (Javier Bardem, Cruz’s real-life husband), who she dated in her youth, and years of secrets and resentment rise to the surface. Cruz has described Laura as the most difficult character she’s ever had to play, and the performance carries her grief and anxiety close to the surface.
