Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s epic odyssey, forged in the still-burning conflicts of our own age and told in lush pictorial imagery, is one of the most poignant filmic works of 2021. In the service of protecting the identity of an Afghan refugee, Rasmussen leverages the power of animation to transport us from the neighborhoods of Kabul to a harrowing flight to Europe, and ultimately, a highly personal coming of age in Denmark.
