Anderson’s debut film, borne out of his 1992 short film, features beta versions of some of the director’s favorite touches (indefatigable underdogs, inventive needle drops) but with a looser aesthetic than his later work. Cowriter Owen Wilson steals the film with a charmingly off-kilter performance as Dignan, a man with a thousand (very detailed) plans, but little direction.
