Whose Streets? 2017. USA. Directed by Sabaah Folayan, Damon Davis. DCP. 102 min.
Directed by activists and filmmakers Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis, Whose Streets? is a landmark document of the Black Lives Matter movement. In the days of rage and grief after teenager Michael Brown was killed by police, thousands took to the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, to protest police violence against Black Americans. Filmed with a keen eye for both small and sweeping moments, Folayan and Davis crafted what they call “an act of recognition” of the humanity of each protestor calling for justice. In 2021, after Black Lives Matter demonstrations swept the country and the movement gained wider support, Whose Streets? indicates in equal measure how far we’ve come and how far we have to go.
