Jesus Camp. 2006. USA. Directed by Heidi Ewing, Rachel Grady. 35mm. 84 min.
Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady’s prescient documentary follows Becky Fischer, a charismatic Evangelical youth preacher who runs a youth Bible camp in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota. Becky uses the power of prayer for both big issues (the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito Jr.) and small (keeping her microphones working during sermons) and she has a very receptive audience in the kids and families who attend her camp. Ewing and Grady’s form of direct cinema allows for both compassion for their subjects and a critical eye on the intense religious and political indoctrination many of them undergo onscreen.
