Hugo. 2011. United States. Directed by Martin Scorsese. Screenplay by John Logan, based on The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. With Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Emily Mortimer, Jude Law. 126 min.
With this adaptation of the award-winning children’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Scorsese has created his first film for a family audience. In early 20th-century Paris, an orphaned boy living in the subterranean passageways of the central train station befriends an eccentric young girl. Hunted by a suspicious station master, the pair sets out to uncover the secrets of a broken automaton and a mysterious old man who holds the key to the lost magic of moviemaking. Supported by Dante Ferretti’s Oscar-worthy production design, Hugo is a heartwarming valentine to cinema and all things mechanical—a glorious lesson in film appreciation.
