Into the Night. 2020. USA. Directed by Laci Dent. 10 min.
After surviving an incident, a guarded young man is befriended by a group of social outcasts living in an artists’ warehouse. Into the Night is a night-in-the-life drama (with genre elements) about identity, finding your people, and surviving vulnerability. When they spot Ian on the street one night, the group offers him a place to stay in their art and music communal living studio. He’s quickly welcomed as family—he’s there to witness a memorial for their deceased friend (“who taught us how to survive when you’re young, Black, and different”), and invited to share in the tribute. But just as soon as he’s beginning to feel embraced, Ian is forced to revisit the outside world and a traumatic experience. Filled with sporadic bursts of punk energy, Dent’s film highlights a distinct countercultural scene and renders it with sensitivity and warmth.
Laci Dent received a 2019 The Future of Film Is Female grant for Into the Night.
