Undine. 2020. Germany/France. Directed by Christian Petzold. With Paula Beer, Franz Rogowski. In German; English subtitles. 91 min.
Undine is a mythological water spirit who takes human form and falls in love with a man. In this film, she is a modern-day Berlin city museum historian who falls instantly in love in front of a shattered aquarium—with an industrial diver, no less. Melodramatic it may sound, but in helmer Christian Petzold’s hands the romantic tale is infused with magic and the supernatural. Like most unforgettable romantic affairs, the film’s exquisitely crafted scenes linger long after they are over. Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski reunite after Transit (2018), their last film with the director, proving once again that they make one of the most endlessly fascinating onscreen duets. Beer won the Berlin Film Festival’s Best Actress honor for her portrayal of the title character. Courtesy of IFC Films
