Te llevo conmigo (I Carry You With Me). 2020. USA/Mexico. Directed by Heidi Ewing. Screenplay by Ewing, Alan Page Arriaga. With Armando Espitia, Christian Vázquez, Michelle Rodríguez. In Spanish; English subtitles. 111 min.
Acclaimed documentarian Heidi Ewing’s (Jesus Camp, One of Us) narrative debut is an utterly innovative work of cinematic storytelling. Despite numerous societal and personal challenges, the relationship between Iván (Armando Espitia), a young father and ambitious chef, and Gerardo (Christian Vazquez), a cosmopolitan professor in Puebla, Mexico, endures. As Iván makes the grueling decision to emigrate to New York City for promising work in a kitchen, he and Gerardo must adapt to their difficult new reality. Oscillating from present-day documentary-style footage to formative moments in Iván and Gerado’s childhoods and evolving relationship, the film tenderly illustrates how we become the people we are and the strength we find in others. Ewing shares a love story that transcends borders, cultures, and conventions, abetted by outstanding performances from her lead actors. Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics
