The Forty-Year-Old Version. 2020. USA. Directed by Radha Blank. 124 min.
New York will always be the place where artists struggle, suffer, soul-search, and succeed. Parts of that city may feel far away right now, but Radha Blank’s to-the-bone comedy brings us back there in a flash. Based on her own experiences as a struggling playwright, shot on glorious black-and-white film(!), and inhabited by a cast of authentically “NYC” characters, this is the movie this city needs now. Blank won a much-deserved Best Director award in the narrative category at Sundance this year for her dynamite feature debut. Courtesy of Netflix
