76 Days. 2020. USA/China. Directed by Hao Wu, Weixi Chen, Anonymous. 93 min.
The opening sequences of this fly-on-the-wall documentary drop us right in the middle of what looks more like an apocalyptic science-fiction—panicked patients try to break into a hospital guarded by PPE-covered medical workers while desperate family members howl for a chance to bid farewell to their loved ones. Shot in four hospitals in Wuhan, China—ground zero of the COVID-19 outbreak—76 Days is a riveting, harrowing portrait from the front line in the early days of what would soon become a global crisis. While this unsanctioned doc focuses entirely on life-saving operations, political questions hang in the air as we contemplate the state of the pandemic that has claimed over 1.2 million lives (at the time of this writing) and crippled global economies.
