The Assistant. 2020. USA. Directed by Kitty Green. With Julia Garner. Closed captioning available. 87 min.
What better way to “cancel” sexual predators than to render them invisible? The menacing presence of a top film executive (think Harvey Weinstein) is heard and felt but never seen in documentarian Kitty Green’s keenly observed narrative debut. At the film’s center is Jane (Julia Garner), a young assistant at the bottom of the production company’s power chain, whose days are spent photocopying, delivering coffee, and cleaning up after her male colleagues—not to mention dealing with scenarios that fall far beyond her official job description. The Assistant takes a piercing look at toxic workplace cultures and the abuse of power in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Courtesy of Bleecker Street
