Avshalom Katz and Ram Loevy’s I Am Ahmad (1966) was the first Israeli documentary portrait of an Arab citizen and, as such, it faced censorship and vitriol on its release. MoMA presents the North American premiere of The Voice of Ahmad, a contemporary response by Jewish and Palestinian-Israeli alumni of Jerusalem’s Sam Spiegel School to this controversial film, tracing 50 years in the life of Ahmad Maswara, an Arab construction worker who initially moved from his village to Tel Aviv in search of work and a place to live. This remarkable anthology captures the perilous state of Palestinian-Israeli relations both then and now in registers of bitterness, melancholy, and caustic humor. North American premiere
