Idlewild. 2006. USA. Written and directed by Bryan Barber. With Cicely Tyson, André Benjamin, Terrence Howard. DCP. 121 min.
In Depression-era Georgia, lifelong friends Percival and Rooster take divergent routes to manhood: Percival is a dutiful son who works for his irritable father while Rooster performs with abandon at a local club called the Church. Idlewild takes its visual cues from classic Hollywood musicals, with feather-clad chorus girls and a camera that moves along with the dynamic dancers. It also tells a common movie crime story, with the new hoods in town trying to move in on the lucrative action at the club. The film costars André Benjamin and Antwan Andre Patton—better known as Outkast.
