Life isn’t easy for 10-year-old Opal; her mother ran off when she was three and her father, the local preacher, has been depressed ever since. They live in a trailer and the church is a convenience store. Adventures are hard to come by for Opal, but one day at the Winn-Dixie supermarket, she is meets a fugitive dog who races around the grocery store while the adults try to catch him. Begrudgingly, Opal is allowed to keep the dog, who she names Winn-Dixie, and this new friendship expands her world and introduces her to many of her eccentric neighbors.
