Horton Foote’s drama has been adapted often since its first airing on NBC in 1953, with Lillian Gish in the lead. In this contemporary iteration, Cicely Tyson is perfection as the irrepressible Carrie Watts, whose activities are tightly restricted by her hovering son, Ludie, and pretentious daughter-in-law, Jessie Mae; they’re not mean or abusive, just overly protective. Carrie wants to make one last visit her hometown of Bountiful, but Ludie and Jessie Mae are too busy to take her there—so an undeterred Carrie decamps to the bus station to start her journey.
