Collins’s career was cut tragically short when he died in the flu epidemic of 1918, at the age of 28. His surviving films suggest that the American cinema lost a filmmaker of rare talent, perhaps not yet in his prime. This program includes the mystery thriller On the Stroke of Twelve, starring and written by Gertrude McCoy; the feuding-families melodrama The Last of the Hargroves (also with McCoy); and the three-reel feature The Slavey Student, starring Viola Dana as an orphan working her way through an exclusive girls’ school. Piano accompaniment by Ben Model (September 16), Makia Matsumura (September 20).
