Munich. 2005. USA. Directed by Steven Spielberg. 35mm. 164 min.
Perhaps only in the masterful hands of Steven Spielberg could a film so deftly capture the harrowing massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics and the subsequent violent events that unfolded around the globe. A group of assassins, led by Avner Kaufman (Eric Bana), is unofficially tasked by the Israeli government with killing the Palestinian terrorists responsible for the gruesome deaths of 11 Israeli athletes. Spielberg focuses meticulously not only on the details of the mission and its global political ramifications, but on the emotional toll such horrific events take on hunters and hunted alike. Daniel Craig, who supports Bana in crucial moments as the mission’s driver, Steve, brings sensitivity and stoic concentration to the role.
