Inside. 1996. USA. Directed by Arthur Penn. 94 min.
Inside, director Arthur Penn’s final feature film before his death in 2010, focuses on the horrible toll Apartheid took on the South African people, and specifically on the collateral damage among those who conspired against the institutionalized system of racial segregation. The film depicts the fictional imprisonment and torture of a South African dissident in 1988, and the aftermath of his imprisonment 10 years after the fact. Inside premiered on Showtime in August 1996, went on to screen theatrically in several film festivals, including Toronto and Cannes, and was later nominated for an Emmy Award.
