Days of Wine and Roses. 1962. USA. Directed by Blake Edwards. Screenplay by J. P. Miller. With Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick, Charles Bickford. 35mm. 117 min.
Joe Clay, a San Francisco public relations executive who mightily indulges in the archetypal two-plus martini lunch, falls in love with teetotaler Kristen. Joe’s influence starts with a couple of Brandy Alexanders each night, but soon enough the newlyweds are in a miserable, hideous downward spiral into alcoholism. Based on J.P. Miller’s Emmy-winning Playhouse 90 teleplay, the film won an Oscar for the title song, written by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer.
