Debra Granik films the story of a young mother battling drug addiction (Vera Farmiga, in one of her most memorable roles) with a touch of documentary, rendering her heroine’s struggles authentic, naturalistic, and nuanced. Granik’s debut announced her ability to tell intimate tales about characters set on a personal, often lonesome, path. Her follow-up films, Winter’s Bone (2010), Jennifer Lawrence’s star-turning picture about a young woman on a mission to save her family, and Leave No Trace (2018), featuring Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie as a father-daughter duo living in isolation, further illustrated her gift for crafting exquisite human stories and inspiring powerful performances from her actors.
