La vie sur terre (Life on Earth). 1998. Mali/Mauritania. Written and directed by Abderrahmane Sissako. With Abderrahmane Sissako, Nana Baby. 35mm. In Bambara and French; English subtitles. 61 min.
On the eve of the new millennium, Sokolo, a small village in Mali, is equally (un)prepared for and indifferent to Y2K. Dramane, played by the director Abderrahmane Sissako (Timbuktu), has just returned home to Sokolo from France. Peddling around on a bicycle, he takes in the sights and sounds of the village and flirts with a beautiful young woman. Lighthearted and incredibly sweet, this directorial debut reflects on the state of Africa and its colonial legacy.
