Few films are so filled with rage that you feel the screen could ignite at any minute. An unemployed butcher roams around like a ticking time bomb, an internal voice firing rapid words of hate at everything and everyone. Straddling the line between horror and comedy, Noé’s debut feature is a riveting sociological study of discontent, isolation, violence, and the underclass. A provocateur with no shortage of material, Noé has since taken audiences on such abrasive, hallucinatory, and nightmarish rides as Irreversible (2002), Enter the Void (2009), Love (2015), and Climax (2018).
