Pi. 1998. USA. Written and directed by Darren Aronofsky. With Sean Gullette, Mark Margolis. 35mm. 84 min.
A most intricate, expansive mind, a math wizard obsessed with a series of numbers connected to π, is trapped in a cramped Chinatown walk-up. Some members of a Hasidic congregation and a Wall Street executive are going after his discoveries, which they believe will unlock secrets of the kabbalah and the stock market, respectively. Laser-sharp and quick editing, a high-voltage techno soundtrack, and engrossing visuals create a kind of sensory overload that emulates the manic world of Max. Since this debut feature, Darren Aronofsky has continued to blow minds with films like Black Swan (2010) and mother! (2017).
