In conjunction with the exhibition Devin Kenny: rootkits rootwork, Devin Kenny presents los giros de la siguiente (2019), a live performance essay developed as part of the artist's residency at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The performance relates to an album of the same name, which Kenny wrote, produced, and performed under the pseudonym "dkyk" (diqueyque). Touching on questions of gentrification and "Black networks" that recur throughout the exhibition at MoMA PS1, los giros de la siguiente explores connections between "cumbias rebajadas," a style of music that originated in Monterrey, Mexico, and "chopped and screwed," a school of hip hop closely associated with the musician DJ Screw and the scene surrounding him in Houston, Texas, during the 1990s.
Free tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6:00 p.m. on the day of the program. Please use the staff entrance at 46-01 21st Street, Long Island City, Queens.
