This public gallery talk will focus on works from the exhibition Simone Fattal: Works and Days to consider how Fattal alludes to the violence and trauma of war through the language of bodily figuration and disfiguration. The talk begins by exploring how the Lebanese-American artist’s firsthand experience of exile during the Lebanese Civil War informed her first sculptural work, Torso Found in Today’s Downtown Beirut (1988), and goes on to trace the evolving relationship between Fattal’s own life and the poetic approaches to materiality, mythology, and archaeology that continue to inform her practice.
