The Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Research Institute for the Study of Art from Latin America presents To Contest the Deafness of the Gaze. This lecture is the first in a series of conversations with figures key to contemporary cultural production from Latin America.
First with La ciénaga (2001), and then with La niña santa (2004), La mujer sin cabeza (2009), and the more recent Zama (2018), Lucrecia Martel has established herself as one of the most distinctively personal contemporary filmmakers. The stories her films tell poignantly address politics, understood as the strife that drives human relationships. With sophistication, they construct universes inhabited by a living multiplicity as sensorial as it is irreducible.
The Argentine filmmaker will discuss her work and the political need to un-learn our relationship to the image and history. “For me,” Martel writes, “it is important to create tools that help us shatter the domestication that has made us stop seeing, stop listening—and become bored with the world. The supremacy of the image is both the distinctive trait of contemporary culture and its Achilles heel.”
Martel will reflect on the relationship between the gaze and the construction of hegemonic identities to propose an alternative, sound-based understanding of time.
Lucrecia Martel has recently shown an interest in languages outside filmmaking. She is the art director of Björk’s Cornucopia. She is currently working on the sound art installation Living Comedor. Her next film, a creative documentary, is titled Chocobar.
Lucrecia Martel’s lecture will be delivered in Spanish with simultaneous translation.

El Instituto de Investigación Patricia Phelps de Cisneros para el estudio del arte de América Latina presenta Para desandar la sordera de la mirada. Esta charla da inicio a una serie de presentaciones de figuras clave de la producción cultural contemporánea de América Latina.
Desde el lanzamiento de La ciénaga (2001), pasando por La niña santa (2004), La mujer sin cabeza (2009), hasta la más reciente Zama (2018), Lucrecia Martel se ha destacado como una de las cineastas más personales de la actualidad. Sus películas se caracterizan por la potencia de sus historias en relación a la política—entendida como la conflictividad que define a las relaciones humanas—, y por una sofisticada construcción de universos habitados por una multiplicidad viviente y sensorial irreductible.
La cineasta argentina hablará de su obra y presentará sus ideas acerca de la necesidad política de des-educar nuestra relación con la imagen y la historia. “Para mí” escribe Martel “es importante crear herramientas que nos ayuden a fracturar la domesticación que nos ha hecho dejar de ver, dejar de escuchar, y aburrirnos del mundo. La supremacía de la imagen es el rasgo distintivo de la cultura contemporánea, pero también su talón de Aquiles”.
Martel reflexionará sobre la relación entre la mirada y la construcción de identidades hegemónicas, para proponer un esquema temporal alternativo basado en el sonido.
Lucrecia Martel ha mostrado recientemente un interés en lenguajes más allá de la cinematrografía. Es la directora artística de Cornucopia de Björk. Al momento trabaja en una instalación sonora, Living Comedor. Su siguiente película, un documental, se titula Chocobar.
