La tragédie de Carmen (The Tragedy of Carmen). 1983. France/Great Britain/West Germany/USA. Directed by Peter Brook. Screenplay by Brook, Jean-Claude Carrière, Marius Constant. With Hélène Delavault, Zehava Gal, Eva Saurova, Howard Hensel. In French; English subtitles. 85 min.
Peter Brook, Jean-Claude Carrière, and composer Marius Constant’s radically reinvented and foreshortened version of Bizet’s Carmen (and its source, the Prosper Merimée novella) was a succès de scandale when it premiered in 1983 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Their rarely screened film version finds stark drama in the cinematography of Sven Nyvkist, designs of Georges Wakhévitch, and stripped-down cast of only four performers.
