Peter Brook, Jean-Claude Carrière, and composer Marius Constant’s radically reinvented and foreshortened version of Bizet’s Carmen (and its source, the Prosper Merimée novella) was a succès de scandale when it premiered in 1983 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Their rarely screened film version finds stark drama in the cinematography of Sven Nyvkist, designs of Georges Wakhévitch, and stripped-down cast of only four performers.
