Les étonnements d’un couple moderne (The Discoveries of a Modern Couple). 1986. France. Directed by Pierre Boutron. Screenplay by Jean-Claude Carrière. With Delphine Seyrig, Jean Carmet, Judith Magre, Henri Garcin. In French; English subtitles
Long before crackpot survivalists became an obsession of American television (The Waking Dead, Doomsday Preppers, and on and on), Jean-Claude Carrière wrote this clever black comedy about a bourgeois couple (the always excellent Delphine Seyrig and Jean Carmet) who grow increasingly convinced that their best friends are aliens and that the Earth’s days are numbered.
