Willem Dafoe’s portrait of Vincent van Gogh, at once earthy and ethereal, is nothing short of miraculous. Meditating once again on the toil and transcendence of artistic creation, director Julian Schnabel is brilliantly aided by co-screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière and cinematographer Benoit Delhomme, who together find meaning in color, light, movement, and language.
