80-year-old widower Carl Fredricksen has been fairly reclusive since his beloved wife Ellie passed away. Carl and Ellie loved adventure and hoped to save up and visit faraway lands one day, but small domestic emergencies and limited finances scuttled their dream. Frustrated with his monotonous existence, Carl, a former balloon salesman, inflates a multitude of balloons, attaches them to his house and, with the foundation ripped away, sails up into the sky. Much to Carl’s surprise, a young boy named Russell accidentally goes along for the ride. For the first time in a long time, Carl is excited about the prospect of this voyage—and possibly meeting his and Ellie’s hero, the adventurer Charles Muntz. This Pixar animated feature celebrates the often overlooked or disregarded resiliency of the aging.
