Groundhog Day. 1993. USA. Directed by Harold Ramis. Screenplay by Ramis, Danny Rubin. With Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Stephen Tobolowsky. DCP. 101 min.
Every February 2—Groundhog Day—Phil the weatherman (Murray) is sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to find out the local groundhog’s prediction for the season ahead. But this year Phil—a snarky guy who thinks he’s a bit smarter than everyone else and is generally rude and insufferable to his coworkers—finds himself caught in a never-ending time loop; the day just keeps repeating itself. How can he free himself from this bizarre vortex? Is he supposed to learn something from this inexplicable experience? Is Phil even capable of change? Bill Murray, deadpanning his way through, finds plenty of time to lob some great one-liners.
