Don Quijote cabalga de nuevo. 1973. Mexico. Directed by Roberto Gavaldón. Screenplay by Carlos Blanco. With Mario Moreno Cantinflas, Fernando Fernán Gómez, María Fernanda D'Ocón. In Spanish; English subtitles. 132 min.
With the Mexican film industry in disarray in the 1970s, Gavaldón turned to Spain to co-finance this ambitious adaptation of Cervantes, which stars the beloved Mexican comedian Mario Moreno Cantinflas as Sancho Panza and the much-honored Spanish actor Fernando Fernán Gómez (The Spirit of the Beehive) as the woeful knight of La Mancha. Photographed in widescreen and color on Spanish locations, the Gavaldón Don Quijote seems quixotic itself—one final gesture of “Golden Age” classicism in the context of a cinema in artistic decline.
