After the international success of Macario, Gavaldón reteamed with star Ignacio López Tarso and playwright Emilio Carballido for another adaptation of a B. Traven story, though this time with political implications that resulted in the film being banned until 1972. In the late 1930s, as the Cárdenas government was nationalizing the Mexican oil industry, a small landowner discovers petroleum reserves on his property; approached by American interests, he refuses to sell, leading to the usual tragic results.
