Written on the Wind. 1956. USA. Directed by Douglas Sirk. Screenplay by George Zuckerman, based on the novel by Robert Wilder. With Lauren Bacall, Rock Hudson, Dorothy Malone. 35mm. 99 min.

Douglas Sirk’s melodrama is among his most Sirkian, with plenty of pent-up emotion, unsentimental passion, and smoldering looks. Mitch, who has worked his way up in the Hadley Oil Company, and Kyle, the son of the company’s founder, are both in love with the ambitious Lucy. Kyle, with his private plane, a luxe Miami hotel room with a closet full of designer gowns, and meals at the 21 Club, quickly gains the upper hand. But Lucy’s hunger for material gain will eventually be her downfall, as it bring her neither happiness nor personal satisfaction.
