Produced as a vehicle for Fox’s second-string Western star Buck Jones, Lazybones is an important film for Frank Borzage, marking out for the first time the dreamy, lunar luftmensch figure who would become the definitive Borzage protagonist in films like 7th Heaven, Liliom, and Man’s Castle. Much as he did in Ford’s Just Pals (also in this program), Jones plays a happy-go-lucky loafer in a small town who adopts a foundling—actually the child of a local woman (ZaSu Pitts) who has got herself in trouble in the big city. When the child grows into a teenager (Madge Bellamy), Lazybones finds his feelings for her complicated by a new emotion.
