The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. 2018. USA. Directed by Joel Coen, Ethan Coen. 132 min.
Death has often come swiftly and unexpectedly for characters in the films of Joel and Ethan Coen, but the denizens of their latest film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, are particularly maligned. These unlucky souls include a singing cowboy (Tim Blake Nelson), a dogged prospector (Tom Waites), an armless, legless oratorical wonder (Harry Melling), and a group of Oregon-bound wagon-train settlers (Zoe Kazan, Bill Heck, Grainger Hines). Bruno Delbonnel’s striking cinematography and Ellen Chenoweth’s inventive casting are highlights of this six-piece suite, while the Coens flex a different set of different stylistic muscles with each vignette.
