When the damaged and often delirious Queen (Olivia Colman, winner of the Best Actress Prize at the Venice Film Festival for this role) is seduced by an arriviste (Emma Stone), the battle with the reigning consigliere (Rachel Weisz) will be ruthless. In the adept and ever-inventive hands of director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster), this 18th-century pas-de-trois is a deliciously irreverent confection, both bitter and sweet.
