Shoplifters. 2018. Japan. Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. In Japanese; English subtitles. 121 min.

At the center of this Cannes Palme d’Or winner is a family of three generations not unlike most others—save for, perhaps, their precarious existence on the fringes of society as crooks and outcasts. When the patriarch of this tight-knit unit brings home a neglected little girl, the family’s many hidden secrets begin to unravel. Shoplifters adds to the decorated body of work by Hirokazu Kore-eda, known mostly for intimate, unassuming, and humanist tales that examine the subject of family. This film was the final screen work of veteran actress Kirin Kiki, who passed away in September 2018 following a luminous career spanning almost six decades. Courtesy of Magnolia Pictures

This film accompanies The Contenders 2018.
