That Lady in Ermine. 1948. USA. Directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Screenplay by Samson Raphaelson. With Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Betty Grable, Cesar Romero. 35mm. 90 min.

In an Italian principality in 1861, Countess Angelina marries Mario, a weakling who runs away just as the invading Hussars are closing in. Magically, the painted portraits of Angelina’s ancestors come to life to offer assistance. In particular the Countess Francesca, whom Angelina resembles, fought off a similar assault 300 years prior. Angelina is all for Francesca’s intervention—until she catches a glimpse of the very handsome leader of the invaders.
