The Other Side of the Wind. 2018. USA. Directed by Orson Welles. 142 min.
Almost 50 years after shooting began, Orson Welles’s famously unfinished film has been given narrative form by editor Bob Murawski and producers Frank Marshall and Filip Jan Rymsza. John Huston plays the legendary Hollywood director Jake Hannaford, who is struggling to complete an Antonioni-esque art house project called The Other Side of the Wind after his leading man (Bob Random) disappears in the middle of production. A 70th birthday party brings together a wide range of guests—including an admiring younger filmmaker (Peter Bogdanovich), an acerbic film critic (Susan Strasberg), and Hannaford’s loyal lieutenant (Norman Foster)—who analyze the director’s life and career as he attempts to screen a workprint of his latest project.
