The fuse that exploded Scorsese’s career, featuring Harvey Keitel as Charlie Cappa, a young Italian American split between his powerful uncle and his reckless best friend. De Niro gives an astoundingly complex early performance as Johnny Boy, a small-time crook with no way of checking his self-destructive tendencies. With energized camerawork, taut editing, and a rollicking soundtrack culled from Scorsese’s personal record collection, Mean Streets holds all the promise of Scorsese’s ouvre, wrapped in a haunting story of loyalty, family, and friendship.
