This eclectic selection of recent titles explores Losier’s rich range of subjects and collaborations. Created for a Berlin festival celebrating Jack Smith, Slap the Gondola! is a prime example of Losier’s performance-based films in the style of Smith’s underground camp. Tony Conrad and Genesis P-Orridge appear as mermaids who lure a cast of dozens to the deck of a freighter docked in Brooklyn. Masterful choreography and handmade costumes, hats, and props evoke vintage chorus girls, while shifts in film speed, musical genres, and tone bring tragicomedy to the polymorphous bacchanal. The program also features a passage filmed in Chong Gon Byun’s studio, where Losier’s stop-motion animation creates an alternate world from the Korean artist’s menagerie of found objects; a study of motion and pluck centered on a trio of sister luchadoras; and O pássaro da noite, a heady fairytale starring Portuguese club performer Fernando, whose cult status is opened up as a passageway to larger legends and fantasy. This latter’s sensuality and formal precision recall the films of João Pedro Rodrigues, who appears alongside a cast of flaming creatures on the banks of the Tagus River. Program approx. 65 min.
