Beginning with Marie Losier’s first 16mm film portrait, from 2003, this program brings together the artist’s signature experimental documentaries about musicians and filmmakers from New York’s avant-garde scene, where Losier found a creative home in the 1990s. The playful, oneiric environments that Losier crafts with her subjects share a metaphysical air, which is especially pronounced in this juxtaposition of titles made over the course of a decade. From a floating Mike Kuchar recounting the memory of being born moments before his twin (and fellow underground film legend) George, to Richard Forman reflecting on desire and interconnectedness onstage and off, to life at home with Alan Vega, lovingly recorded with his family at his side, Losier hints at the shared imagination and impulses that make us human. Other cinematic environments from Losier thrive in a different register, as seen in a pair of rooftop capers starring George Kuchar made in the mid-2000s. From a picnic in housecoats interrupted by killer bees to celestial voyagers arriving in a giant pot of spaghetti, these B-movie riffs, unfolding against a background of Manhattan skyscrapers, display Losier’s great ability to create fantasy with the simplest ingredients.
